Statement by Mayor Crombie Marking Hazel McCallion Day 2018

“It is with great pleasure that I wish my friend and mentor, the indominatable and indefatigable, Hazel McCallion a very happy Birthday.

“I also wish all Mississauga and Ontario residents a happy Hazel McCallion Day. It was an honour to mark the first Hazel McCallion Day at City Hall last year with Premier Wynne and over 400 well-wishers.

“Thank you to Mississauga-Brampton South MPP, Amrit Mangat for her work on this important legislation. The Hazel McCallion Day Act, 2017 was supported by all parties in the Ontario legislature, which speaks to the high regard so many people have for Hazel McCallion.

“As only the City’s fourth Mayor I, along with my Council colleagues and City staff, have the privilege of building upon the foundations Hazel McCallion laid for Mississauga. We find ourselves in a position of strength because of the over 40 years of hard work, dedication, and public service she gave to the residents of this City.

“As Hazel is fond of saying, we must “do our homework,” if we want to be successful in anything we do. Throughout her career, Hazel did her homework and took the time to get it right. When she began her 36 year tenure as Mayor, our City was mainly farm fields and fruit trees. Today, it is the sixth largest city in Canada and an economic powerhouse with a quality of life that Hazel would say is “second to none.”

“Looking around the City Hazel’s fingerprints are on everything. From our burgeoning downtown core, to the Living Arts Centre, to Sheridan College, to our Central Library, to our many community centres and arenas, to our commitment to economic development and prosperity, Hazel is everywhere in Mississauga.

“Hazel McCallion is a city-builder and city-building is nation-building. Through her decades of work, Hazel helped to shape the social and economic fabric of Canada for the better.

“On a personal note, Hazel has been a friend for many years, but also a mentor. She taught me the ropes at City Hall, encouraged me to run for Mayor, and has always provided wise counsel and a receptive ear. She is a force of nature, which is why they aptly call the Hurricane. I am honoured to know her and wish her nothing but many more years of health and happiness.

“Happy Birthday, Hazel!”
