On Sunday, September 10, Brampton fire stations will recognize the first Firefighters’ National Memorial Day and fly flags at half-mast in memory of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.
As well, Brampton firefighters and the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Honour Guard will be in Ottawa to participate in Firefighters’ National Memorial Day ceremonies.
For the past 14 years, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation has marked the second Sunday in September as a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe. On August 25, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced the formalization of this practice by establishing Firefighters’ National Memorial Day on the second Sunday in September each year.
Firefighters’ National Memorial Day commemorates courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment of firefighters as they serve their communities. Brampton is proud and grateful to participate in this memorial.
According to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, over 1,300 firefighters have died in the line of duty since 1848.
